Telling real Yemeni Sidr from Sidr that has been cut
10%
the smallest amount of cheap honey the test can still catch
Laboratory study · Tested on the honey itself · Yemeni Sidr honey
What they did
Thirteen samples of genuine monofloral Yemeni Sidr honey were read by ultraviolet spectroscopy. The readings were used to build three statistical models, which were then challenged with twenty-five honey samples of different botanical origins, including cheaper local polyfloral honeys.
What they found
- The models separated the genuine Sidr samples from the non-Sidr samples.
- Blending was detected once more than 10% of the sample was cheaper polyfloral honey.
- The authors present it as a method other honey types could be authenticated with.
What this study does not show
- This is a test of honey, not a test of what honey does. It says nothing about health.
- Thirteen genuine samples is a small reference set. A model is only as good as what it was built on.
- It is a research method, not the test on our jars. Our laboratory work is C4 sugar analysis and total activity, and we publish those separately.
- Detection starts above 10%. A smaller adulteration would not have been caught here.
Why we publish it
The common fraud in this market is not watered-down honey. It is Sidr from somewhere else sold as Yemeni, and a lower grade sold as a higher one. This is the published evidence that the difference is measurable.
