The research behind Yemeni honey

We sell honey, not medicine. Sidr and the tree it comes from have been studied for decades, mostly in journals nobody outside a university library would open. Here they are in plain language — each one with the limits of what it can show printed beside it, and every citation checked against the publisher's own record rather than copied from somewhere else.

How we read research

  • A study is not a promise. Every study on this page happened in a laboratory dish or on a label. None of them was carried out in people. That is a long way from someone eating a spoonful of honey, and we do not close that gap with words.
  • We publish the studies we lose. Three laboratories have put Sidr next to Manuka. Manuka needed less honey in two of them. All three are on this page.
  • We name the country. Most honey research is Saudi, Algerian or Emirati, not Yemeni. Each page says where the honey in that study came from.
  • If we cannot check a citation, we do not use it. Two well-known Sidr papers are missing from this page because one has a dead DOI and the other does not appear in any research registry. We would rather have a shorter page.

What our own laboratory tests measure

Our Sidr honeys are tested by ALS Food and Environmental in New Zealand, the laboratory formerly known as Analytica. Two things are measured.

  • Total activity (TA) expresses antimicrobial activity in the dish as a phenol equivalent. TA 26.8 means activity equivalent to a 26.8% phenol solution in that test. It is a measurement of the honey, not a statement about a person.
  • C4 sugar analysis uses carbon isotope ratios to detect added industrial sugar, the cane and corn syrups used to stretch honey. Our approved customer-facing result for both Sidr honeys is a C4 sugar result of 1.0, which supports authenticity and no cheap syrup addition.

What we do not test: moisture, HMF, diastase number, and pollen analysis for monofloral confirmation. Other sellers sometimes imply a full panel. Ours is two tests, named, on the honeys that have them.

The bee, and why the valley matters

Yemen's native honeybee, Apis mellifera jemenitica, is smaller and more heat-tolerant than European strains and resists Varroa mites through its own grooming behaviour, so our beekeeper uses no miticides. In Prof. Khanbash's tree survey, Sidr density reaches about 50.8 trees per hectare in Wadi Shohouh. Density plus isolation is what makes a genuinely monofloral honey possible: during the Sidr flowering, there is little else in reach for the bees to visit.

Sumra: early evidence, honest about it

A 2008 study looked at Sumra honey's effect on inflammatory bowel conditions in animals and reported positive effects through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. That is one animal study, and most Arabic-language sources discuss Sumra across the Arabian Peninsula rather than Yemeni Sumra specifically. In Yemen the tradition is clear and old: Sumra is the honey for the stomach, taken on an empty stomach. The research is not. We publish both statements as what they are, and no lab result for Sumra. Sal: no published research at all

We have found no published study on Sal honey from Euphorbia ammak. What exists is a long Yemeni practice of keeping Sal for the throat and chest in the cold months and giving it to smokers, and what our customers tell us. The heat in the spoon is real and comes from compounds carried over from the plant's nectar, and that is as far as the evidence goes. Why the supply is small

Yemen's beekeeping is under pressure: landmines and checkpoints that stop hives being moved between pastures, fuel prices that push people to cut Sidr trees for firewood, pesticide spraying, climate change, and levies on beekeepers. The Sana'a Center for Strategic Studies documented this in 2023. When we say a harvest is limited, this is the reason, and it is also why we buy from one beekeeper and pay what the honey costs.

What we do not claim

  • No DIVINEDROP honey diagnoses, treats, cures or prevents any disease.
  • A laboratory result describes a batch of honey, not what will happen to a person.
  • Honey is a sugar-rich food. It is not suitable for infants under 12 months, and anyone managing a health condition should speak to their doctor.
  • Where we have no evidence, we say so on the page, as with Sal and Sumra above.
