Sumra honey against drug-resistant bacteria
59%
biofilm growth stopped in the strongest result, in glassware
Laboratory study · Tested in a dish · Saudi Sumra honey
What they did
Saudi Sumra honey was tested by broth dilution against clinical isolates of bacteria and fungi, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Biofilm formation, quorum sensing — the signalling bacteria use to coordinate — and antioxidant activity were measured, and the honey's composition was read by GC-MS.
What they found
- Minimum inhibitory concentration 300 mg/mL against S. aureus including MRSA, 250 against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 350 against E. coli, 250 against Acinetobacter baumannii.
- Biofilm formation reduced by 59% for Bacillus subtilis, 48% for S. aureus, 38% for E. coli, 33.6% for P. aeruginosa.
- Antioxidant activity: DPPH IC50 7.7 mg/mL, ABTS IC50 5.4 mg/mL.
What this study does not show
- This happened in glassware. It is not a treatment, it was not tried in animals or people, and we do not present it as either.
- The concentrations are enormous — 300 mg/mL is roughly a third honey by weight, held against bacteria in a dish. Eating a spoonful is nothing like it.
- The honey was Saudi Sumra. Ours is Yemeni Sumra from Wadi Doan. Same tree, different ground.
- One sample, one laboratory, not replicated elsewhere.
Why we publish it
Most Yemeni-honey research is about Sidr. This is one of the few papers about Sumra, the honey Yemenis have always kept for the stomach.
